Women’s Basketball Hosts Sectional Rounds of NCAA Tournament This Weekend

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College women's basketball team is set to host an NCAA Division III Tournament Sectional in Morrell -Gymnasium, March 14-15. The winner of this weekend's games will advance to the Final Four in Salem, Va., next week.

WEEKEND SCHEDULE
Third Round - Friday, March 14
5pm – McMurry (23-5) vs. Gustavus Adolphus (28-1)
7:30pm – Bowdoin (29-0) vs. Smith (28-2)
 
Quarterfinals – Saturday, March 15
7:30pm – Friday's winners 

TICKET INFORMATION
Remaining tickets will be sold at the door beginning at 4:00 p.m. on Friday afternoon. NCAA minimum ticket prices are $15 for adults and $10 for seniors, students, and children.

REGIONAL PREVIEW
Bowdoin College Polar Bears (29-0)
The NESCAC Champions have advanced to the Division III "Sweet Sixteen" for the second straight year and 17th time in school history...Bowdoin is looking for their fourth Final Four appearance...the Polar Bears are one of only two undefeated teams in Division III (NYU), and entered the tourney unbeaten for the second time in program history (2004)...spearheading the effort this season for Bowdoin has been two-time NESCAC Player of the Year Sydney Jones, who is the only player in program history to accumulate 1500 points, 600 rebounds, 300 assists, and 200 steals in a career...she joined Lora Trenkle (Bowdoin) and Caroline Stedman (Amherst) as the only two-time NESCAC Players of the Year...Abbie Quinn was a second team selection while head coach Meg Phelps, with assistants Abby Kelly and Taylor Choate, were named the conference's coaching staff of the year for the second time in a row...Bowdoin's hallmark this season has been their defense, which is allowing 48.8 points per game. Only two teams have scored more than 60 points against Bowdoin this year and 16 of 29 opponents have been held to 50 or under...the Polar Bears advanced to the third round with a pair of double-digit home wins against Brooklyn and Cortland last weekend. 
 
Gustavus Adolphus Gusties (28-1)
The Gusties, winners of three straight MIAC regular season championships, are enjoying their best season in program history with a school-record 28 wins this year...Gustavus Adolphus is making their second appearance in the Sweet Sixteen (2018) in their 11th NCAA Division III Tournament appearance... Laurie Kelly named MIAC Coach of the Year for the first time in her career....in her 13th season with the program, Kelly has won 285 career games and is the winningest coach in program history...Kylie Baranick, Syd Hauger, Rachel Kawiecki and Emma Kniefel were named All-Conference...Gustavus hosted their first regional since the NCAA established the pod format in 2006 last weekend, and advanced to the third round with an overtime win over Wisconsin-Lutheran and a six-point victory over Wartburg. 
 
McMurry University War Hawks (23-5)
In their first NCAA Division III Tournament appearance in 17 years, McMurry advanced to the Sweet Sixteen for the first time since 2000 with a pair of wins last weekend on the campus of East Texas Baptist...at 23-5, the War Hawks have posted the fifth most wins in a season in program history... Senior Emily Holland stands as the school's record holder in multiple categories including 230 3-pointers made, 616 3-pointers attempted, and free throw percentage at 82.03%. She is also in the second all-time in McMurry women's basketball for career scoring with 1,516 points...During her junior year she was named ASC conference Player of the Year and was named SCAC all-conference in women's soccer this past fall...in their first weekend of NCAA play, McMurry outscored opponents 74-50 in first half and held opponents to 33% shooting from the field...in his fourth season at the helm, head coach Drew Long has turned the program from a three-win program (2021-22) to a Sweet Sixteen appearance in his tenure. 
 
Smith College Pioneers (28-2)
The 2023-24 National runners-up, Smith is making its seventh NCAA Tournament appearance after its fifth-straight NEWMAC title this winter...the Pioneers advanced out of their home regional with a buzzer-beating win against Amherst in the second round last Saturday...in her 18th season head coach Lynn Hersey has a 329-144 career record at Smith...Ally Landau, a graduate transfer from Haverford, was named First Team All-NEWMAC and was the only player in the conference to lead their team in scoring, rebounding, assists, steals, and blocks this season...Smith's only loss since December 1 came at home to Tufts on February 11...the Pioneers rank sixth nationally in field goal percentage (46.12%) and ninth nationally in scoring defense (48.4 ppg)
