BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin women's basketball team saw its season come to an end in 53-47 Sweet Sixteen matchup with Smith College on Friday night.
The Polar Bears conclude the season with a 29-1 record, an undefeated regular season, and NESCAC Championship title. The Pioneers are 29-2 and advance to the Elite Eight against Gustavus Adolphus with a 7:30 p.m. game on Saturday, March 15.
Game Highlights
- Smith held a narrow 11-10 lead at the end of the first quarter, but Bowdoin answered in the second. The Polar Bears went up 13-11 off a quarter-opening three-pointer from Maria Belardi.
- The teams traded blows before Bowdoin went on a seven-point run, only to see the Pioneers score four in the final 30 seconds of the half.
- Smith took the lead off a Hannah Martin jumper and didn't look back. The Pioneers led by eight by the end of the third quarter sparked by 5-for-5 shooting from Martin.
- Bowdoin trailed by as much as ten points in the final frame but cut the deficit to four with seven points from Sydney Jones and another four from Grace Kinum.
By the Numbers
- The Pioneers outrebounded Bowdoin 44-33 and went 12-for-15 from the line while holding the Polar Bears to a single free throw.
- Jones had a game-high 19 points with four steals and a pair of blocks while pulling down nine rebounds.
- Kinum was the only other Polar Bear with double-digit points, scoring 11, with six boards.
- Martin shot 5-for-10 from the field and shot 6-for-6 from the free throw line. Jane Loo added 12 points.
- Jazmyn Washington pulled down ten rebounds.
