LAST WEEK
The
Polar Bears defeated Williams 20-0Â to improve to 2-0 for the first time since 2005. Middlebury dropped a close 24-21 decision on the road at Wesleyan to drop to 1-1 this fall.
Â
HISTORIC START
After last week's win, Bowdoin is 2-0 for the first time since 2005, posted its first shutout since 2004, and recorded its first shutout of Williams since 1979. The Polar Bears began the 2005 season 4-0, but have only started a year with three straight wins twice since World War II (2005, 1964).
POLAR BEAR LEADERS
Bowdoin's defense has been stellar against Hamilton and Williams to begin the 2023 campaign and posted its first shutout since 2004 in last week's win over the Ephs. The Polar Bears lead the NESCAC in scoring defense (6.0 ppg) and have allowed the second-fewest yards (266.0/game).
Max Jacobs ranks third in the league in sacks (3.5) while
Koy Price is fifth (2.5). The Polar Bear offense is averaging 408.0 yards/game to rank fourth in the conference and is averaging 6.1 yards per play, second best in the league.
Andrew Boel is third in the league in passing (295.5 yards/game) and has thrown four touchdowns, good for second in the NESCAC.
Colton Fahey is third in the league in receiving (87.0 yards/game).
Â
SCOUTING THE PANTHERS
Offensively, Middlebury ranks fifth in the league in scoring (21.0 points) and third in the league in defense (15.5 points/game). The Panthers are averaging 285.5 yards on offense, standing seventh in the NESCAC while permitting 297.5 yards/game to rank fifth in the conference. Quarterback Cole Kennon is Middlebury's top offensive performer, ranking fifth in the NESCAC in passing with 366 yards and two TD's this fall. The Panthers' defense leads the NESCAC in sacks (ten) with Thomas Kenary (4.5) and Dave Filias (4.5) tied for the league lead.
Â
LAST MEETING
Last October in Brunswick, Bowdoin took a 10-0 lead in the first quarter, but Middlebury rallied – sparked by a blocked punt in the second quarter – to score
20 unanswered points in a 20-10 victory.
BOWDOIN vs. MIDDLEBURY – ALL-TIME
Despite the long-time rivalry between the schools in most sports, the football teams have played just 27 times due to the NESCAC's rotating schedule prior to 2018. Middlebury has won eight straight in the series dating back to 2012 with Bowdoin's last win coming in 2009 (the teams didn't play in 2010, '11, '14, '16 and '20).
