Football Posts Impressive Shutout of Williams in Home Opener

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College football team improved to 2-0 for the first time since 2005, dominating Williams in a 20-0 win at Whittier Field on Saturday afternoon. The Polar Bears (2-0) recorded their first shutout since the 1998 season and blanked Williams (1-1) for the first time since 1979.

Game Highlights
  • The Bowdoin defense was the story of the day, as the Polar Bears completely overwhelmed Williams from the start in an impressive performance.
  • The Polar Bears held Williams to just 60 yards on 32 first half plays, including -2 yards passing and just four first downs.
  • Meanwhile, the Bowdoin offense took advantage of good field position, marching 55 yards in eight plays to take a 3-0 lead on a Jotham Casey 32-yard field goal at 9:51 of the opening quarter.
  • Later in the quarter, Bowdoin covered 77 yards on nine plays that included a 33-yard pass from Andrew Boel to Colton Fahey and a highlight reel 26-yard catch by Brendan King. Two plays later, Boel found King in the right flat for a two-yard score and 10-0 lead.
  • Bowdoin put an exclamation point on the first half, stopping Williams on a fourth-and-short at midfield (a 13-yard loss on a bad snap). A long run by Andre Eden put Bowdoin inside the Williams 5 and Andrew Boel punched it home with 1:36 left in the half for a 17-0 Polar Bear lead at the break.
  • The Polar Bear defense capped the win by forcing two punts, an end zone interception by Nick Viscusi, and two turnovers on downs to close out the win.
  • Bowdoin wrapped up the scoring with a 41-yard field goal by Caden Perry with 11:31 to go.
By The Numbers
  • The win broke a nine-game losing streak by Bowdoin against Williams, and was Bowdoin's first shutout of Williams since the 1979 season (7-0). It is Bowdoin's largest margin of victory against the Ephs since a 20-0 win in 1963.
  • The shutout is the first for the Bowdoin football team since 1998, which came in a 19-0 victory over Trinity.
  • Andrew Boel went 14-27 with 244 yards plus a passing and a rushing touchdown.
  • Andre Eden rushed for 64 yards on 15 carries while Robbie Long added 48 on 16 attempts.
  • Colton Fahey caught four passes for 80 yards while Jed Hoggard covered 75 yards on three catches. Brendan King had four receptions for 65 yards and a TD.
  • Defensively, Bowdoin had six sacks on the day, including two apiece for Max Jacobs and Koy Price. The six team sacks are the most since 2015 against Hamilton.
  • Nick Viscusi had six tackles – tied for the team lead with Ty Jones-Garland – and also had an interception. Chris Althoff had two pass breakups.
  • Bowdoin totaled 362 yards of offense while holding Williams to 236 (199 of which came on the Ephs' final three drives). The Polar Bears also dominated the time of possession in the win, 36:37 to 23:33.
