Football Comes Up Just Short in First Loss of the Season at Middlebury

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College football team fell for the first time this season, dropping a shootout at Middlebury, 34-27. In a game that featured four tie scores, the Panthers pulled away late and held off a Bowdoin rally to improve to 2-1. Bowdoin also stands at 2-1 after Saturday's results.

Game Highlights
  • The key sequence of the game came midway through the fourth quarter, with Middlebury clinging to a 31-27 lead. Dan Fiore intercepted a Cole Kennan pass deep in Panther territory and returned it to the Middlebury 11.
  • After moving the ball to the Middlebury 5, Andrew Boel looked to find an open receiver in the endzone for the go-ahead score, but Finn Muldoon stepped in front and picked off the pass for a touchback, preserving the Middlebury lead they would never relinquish.
  • For nearly the first three quarters, the teams traded scores in succession, in an incredibly tight game at Youngman Field.
  • Middlebury took their opening drive for a touchdown, only to see Bowdoin answer with a seven-play, 74-yard drive that ended in a one yard Andrew Boel run.
  • Another Middlebury score was answered with an impressive 83-yard drive from the Polar Bears, as Bowdoin tied the game at 14 following a Boel pass to Colton Fahey.
  • Again, the teams traded scores, with Bowdoin knotting the contest at 21 on a 19-yard pass from Boel to Brendan King.
  • Middlebury took a 24-21 lead at the break thanks to a late field goal, but Jotham Casey answered midway through the third quarter for Bowdoin, nailing a 27-yarder to make it 24 all.
  • Later in the third, Middlebury was able to cash in their final touchdown of the day, but Bowdoin cut the lead to 31-27 following another Casey field goal, this time from 25 yards out.
  • Middlebury tacked on another field goal in the fourth quarter and Bowdoin had one last gasp chance, moving the ball to midfield with under two minutes to play, but turned it over on downs.
By The Numbers
  • The loss spoiled a historic effort from Andrew Boel, who threw for the second-most yards in school history in a 32-52 effort for 417 yards through the air.
  • Andre Eden rushed for 73 yards for Bowdoin while Colton Fahey caught eight passes for 145 yards. Brendan King (seven catches, 86 yards) and Jed Hoggard (six catches, 85 yards) also had big days for the Polar Bears.
  • Defensively Ty Jones-Garland and Chris Althoff had seven tackles each for Bowdoin. Max Jacobs had 1.5 sacks and a pass breakup.
  • Both teams gained over 500 yards of total offense on the afternoon, but the difference proved to be three Bowdoin turnovers (two interceptions, one fumble).
Up Next
  • Bowdoin will look to bounce back next Saturday when they host Tufts University under the lights at Whittier Field at 6:30 p.m.
