Football Can't Hold Early Lead in Loss to Middlebury

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College football team squandered a first half lead in a 20-10 loss to Middlebury on Saturday at Whittier Field. The Panthers remain unbeaten at 3-0 this season while the Polar Bears fall to 1-2 on the year.
 
Game Highlights
  • Bowdoin jumped ahead early, getting a 40-yard field goal from Jotham Casey on its opening drive of the game.
  • An interception by Koy Price set up Bowdoin moments later, as Andre Eden capped a six-play, 47-yard drive with a four-yard plunge to give the Polar Bears a 10-0 lead just seven minutes into the game.
  • Middlebury was able to trim into the lead with a 21-yard field goal by Andrew Haas at the end of the first quarter, Bowdoin maintained their 10-3 lead until late in the second quarter.
  • The Panthers blocked a Bowdoin punt with three minutes to go in the half, and immediately capitalized with a two-play scoring drive to tie the game and, after a quick Bowdoin three-and-out, took the lead on another two-play drive, finishing it with a 35-yard strike from Ben Tauber to Donovan Wood for a 17-10 edge at halftime.
  • The only scoring of the second half came early in the third quarter on another field goal by Haas at the 11:58 mark.
  • Bowdoin controlled the pace of play throughout the second half of the contest, handling the ball six times and marching into Middlebury territory on all four possessions.
  • Bowdoin had to settle for two punts, a missed field goal and three turnover on downs; all three coming in the fourth quarter in Middlebury territory.

  • Bowdoin outgained Middlebury 321-279, forced two turnovers and owned a 36:59-23:01 advantage in time of possession in the game.
  • The Polar Bears went 1-5 in the red zone, however, and went 5-19 on third down conversions in the loss.
  • Andrew Boel went 23-42 for 234 yards passing for Bowdoin while Andre Eden finished with 65 yards rushing on 30 attempts. Jed Hoggard caught a team-high six passes for 76 yards.
  • Middlebury's Tauber went 19-34 for 172 yards while LeeCharles McNeil carried the ball 17 times for 87 yards.
  • Max Jacobs had seven tackles for Bowdoin while Drew Ortiz had seven stops, two tackles for a loss and a sack.
  • Koy Price had an interception, three tackles, and three breakups.
