BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin women's swimming and diving team turned in multiple record breaking performances en route to a fourth place finish at the 2023 NESCAC Championship over the weekend.
The Jumbos came away with the win and 1984.5 points. The Polar Bears narrowly missed out on third place, with Amherst compiling 1107 and Bowdoin earning 1092.
Thursday Highlights
- The Polar Bears opened the meet with a school record shattering 800 free relay. Elizabeth Walsh, Liv Smith, Carolyn Casey, and Brynn Wright finished fourth overall with a time of 7:31.59. The team of three first-years and one sophomore set a strong tone for the Polar Bears at the 2023 Championship meet.
Friday Meet Highlights
- Records continued to fall on the second day of action. Anna Roberts broke the school record in the 50 breaststroke during the morning qualifying session (29.18) and reset the mark again in the finals (28.91) to finish second overall.
- Bowdoin's 200 free relay took second place to open the evening session. The quartet of Ella Martin, Tatum Zupnik, Casey Maroney, and Ella Riccio combined for a record-breaking 1:33.70.
- Bowdoin secured a second place finish for the third straight event as Zupnik finished the 50 butterfly with a time of 24.85 to set a new program-best mark.
- Martin earned Bowdoin's first podium-topping finish with a win in the 50 backstroke and a time of 25.64. Teammate Frankie Garces also earned a spot in the finals heat and finished tied for fifth at 26.65.
- Walsh tallied a third place individual finish in the 200 IM with a time of 2:04.51.
- Zupnik collected her second top-two finish of the day with a 23.44 in the 50 free. Riccio also earned a spot in the finals and finished fifth overall (23.56).
- Bowdoin closed out the first full day of competition with a bronze relay in the 400 medley. Martin, Roberts, Zupnik, and Riccio combined for a time of 3:48.26.
Saturday Meet Highlights
- Walsh continued a strong first-year showing at the meet with a runner-up and personal best finish time in the 400 IM (4:24.84).
- Roberts broke another school record in the breaststroke, this time at the 100 yard distance. Roberts finished third with a 1:02.95.
- Martin earned a spot in the 100 backstroke finals and finished tied for fourth (56.96).
- Sadie Smith punched a ticket to regionals with a fourth place 439.05 point performance on the 3 meter.
- Bowdoin's relay teams continued to excel as Martin, Roberts, Zupnik, and Riccio were silver medalists in the 200 medley relay (1:42.30).
Sunday Meet Highlights
- The Polar Bears maintained their presence in the championship heats during Sunday's afternoon session, as Smith finished sixth in the 200 backstroke (2:05.56).
- Riccio turned in a fifth place performance in the 100 free (51.22).
- Roberts broke her own record (and third of the meet) in the 200 breaststroke for a third place finish with a time of 2:16.41.
- Walsh turned in a fourth place finish in the 200 butterfly (2:04.13).
- Bowdoin closed out the meet with another second place relay. Martin, Zupnik, Casey, and Riccio combined for a time of 3:26.76 in the 400 free relay.
