Late Rally Comes Up Short For Women's Lacrosse Against F&M

ENGLEWOOD, Fla. – A furious comeback by the Bowdoin women's lacrosse team came up just short in a 14-12 loss to second-ranked Franklin & Marshall on Wednesday morning in Florida.

The Polar Bears (1-2) are ranked 14th in the latest Division III poll. The Diplomats improve to 4-1 with the win.

Game Highlights

  • Franklin & Marshall got off to a scalding hot start, scoring the first six goals of the game to put the Polar Bears in an early hole.
  • The Diplomats led by as may as seven goals in the opening half, but two late scores by Eliza Denious trimmed the lead to 10-4 at halftime.
  • After a Diplomat goal right out of the break extended the lead back to seven, 11-4, Bowdoin caught fire, rolling off a 7-1 run.
  • Amanda Anderson got it going for the Polar Bears in the surge, which saw seven difference goal scorers.
  • When Katie Miller scored with 8:06 remaining, it drew Bowdoin within a single goal, 12-11.
  • Maddie Hughes stemmed the tide for F&M, pushing the lead back to two goals, 13-11, with 6:02 left, but Bowdoin's Miller replied again at 2:05, cutting it to a single goal game, 13-12.
  • Bowdoin won the esuing draw control, but a turnover squelched all hopes of a comeback as Maisie O'Shea put home the game-clinching score for the Diplomats with 1:02 to go.

By The Numbers

  • F&M held a 32-29 edge in shots, but Bowdoin owned a 19-14 advantage in the second half thanks to eight draw control victories in the frame.
  • Bowdoin committed 20 turnovers in the loss, however and went just 2-10 from free position.
  • Eliza Denious and Katie Miller had three goals apiece for Bowdoin.
  • Morgan Pinado and Miller had four draws apiece while Denious added three caused turnovers, three ground balls and two draws.
  • Fiona Bundy had a goal and four assists for the Polar Bears.
  • Maisie O'Shea and Maddie Hughes had three goals apiece for the Diplomats, who got eight saves from Julia McKay.
  • Bowdoin's Erin Morrissey made seven saves
