Miller Caps Late Comeback As Women's Lacrosse Tips Colby

WATERVILLE, Maine - Bowdoin first-year Katie Miller capped a four-goal night with the game-winner late in the second half to lift the Polar Bear women's lacrosse team to an important 12-11 win at Colby on Wednesday evening.

The 18th-ranked Polar Bears improve to 9-3 (4-3 NESCAC) while the 15th-ranked Mules fall to 6-5 (2-5 NESCAC).

Game Highlights

  • In a competitive back-and-forth contest, the teams were tied at halftime and neither squad could open up more than a one-goal lead at any point in the second half.
  • Bowdoin controlled the early going, taking a 4-1 lead on a pair of Katie Miller goals sandwiched around scores from Hannah Hirschfeld and Eliza Denious.
  • Colby stormed back on a pair of Emma Banks goals, and took their first lead of the game at 7-6 on a Maddie Hatch goal late in the opening half.
  • Kate McAloon's goal at 1:52 for Bowdoin sent the teams into the break tied at 7-7.
  • The teams traded goals throughout the second period, but consecutive goals by Sasha Fritts and Taylor Moore gave the Mules a 10-9 lead with 13:45 to go.
  • Bowdoin rebounded, getting scores from Kara Finnerty and Miller to regain the lead, 11-10, just 1:17 later.
  • Kendall Smith deadlocked the score for Colby at 9:59, setting up a furious final ten minutes.
  • The game-winner came off the stick of Miller, who took a feed from McAloon and deposited the go-ahead goal with 4:16 remaining.
  • The Bowdoin defense locked down the win by denying a late free-position shot attempt by the Mules and Paige Brown scooped the ground ball to clinch it for the Polar Bears.

By The Numbers

  • Katie Miller continued her torrid rookie campaign with four goals and an assist for Bowdoin.
  • Hannah Hirschfeld had a goal and two assists, as did Natalie Rudin. Eliza Denious pitched in a pair of goals.
  • Denious had five draw controls, as did Kara Finnerty as the Polar Bears owned an important 16-9 advantage for the game. Finnerty also had four ground balls.
  • Kayli Weiss stopped ten shots for Bowdoin in the victory.
