Polar Bears Complete Five Regatta Weekend

Coach Pizzo's Report. - September 25

The Polar Bears competed in five regattas this past weekend including our first New England Championships of the fall season.

The Men's and Women's Singlehanded Champs hosted by Roger Williams had intense competition.  Nine races were completed on Saturday in a moderate northerly breeze with lots of current.  On Sunday, racing did not happen until the very end of the day when the seabreeze finally kicked in.  Christian Filter '20 sailed a solid event, improving throughout and finished 12th of the 27 sailors.  Claire Havig '21 had some good moments and struggled at times finishing 15th of the 17 sailors.

All of the double handed events this past weekend were once again plagued by a lack of breeze.  At the Chris Loder Trophy hosted by UNH, three races were completed on Saturday but no races were completed on Sunday which means that the regatta was not official.  Sailing for the Polar Bears at the Loder was Louis Frumer '18, Nicholas Sarni '20, Kevin Elk '20, Rowan Byrne '21, and Martie Ogle '18.

At the Women's Invite also hosted by Roger Williams, the team finished 11 out of the 14 teams.  The team focused on boat speed and starting in lots of current.  Ellis Price '18, Caitlin Tardio '19, Kelsey Slack '21, and Isabelle Austin-Green '19 sailed for the Polar Bears. The highlight of the event was Price and Tardio finishing fourth overall in A-division.

Tufts was the host of the Hood Trophy which was one of the major coed interconference regattas of the weekend, featuring 20 teams from all over the country.  Conditions were light and tricky on Saturday allowing for 6 A races and 4 B races to be sailed.  On Sunday, mother nature won with spectatuclar sunshine but no breeze.  The Poalr Bear team of Matt Kaplan '19, Emily Gonzalez '20, Harrison Hawk '18, Louisa Lindgren '19, Jake Griffin '18, Nora Cullen '18, and Marie Bergsund '20 finished 4th overall out of the 20 teams competing.

This upcoming weekend will be another busy one with the team sailing at Regis Trophy at BU, the Danmark Trophy at Coast Guard, the Hewitt Trophy at Dartmouth, and the Smith Trophy at MIT.
