Coach Pizzo's Report - September 18
The Polar Bears competed in three events this past weekend including the Hatch Brown Trophy at MIT, the Central 2 at Boston College and the Ross Trophy at UVM. Light winds drastically reduced racing at all events this weekend.
At UVM, the team completed two races on Saturday in very light conditions. Unfortunately on Sunday, there was no wind and thus no racing. The Polar Bears were winning the event after 2 races but because we did get in a third race, it was not an official regatta. Alex Vasiliou '18 and Jake Griffin '18 sailed A-division with Matt Safford '20 and Marie Bergsund '20 sailed B-division.
The most races this weekend took place at the Central Series hosted by Boston College. Eight races were completed in a light to moderate sea breeze on Dorchester Bay. The Polar Bears finished 8th out of 17 teams. Michael Kann '19 and Eve Allen '19 finished 11th in A-division with first years Alden Grimes and Julia Adams finishing 4th in B-division.
Finally at MIT, racing was cancelled on Saturday because of a lack of wind. On Sunday, we were able to complete three races in each division to have a formal regatta. The Polar Bears struggled in the light air and were able to put up consistent races. The team finished 15th of the 20 teams. Matt Kaplan '19 and Louisa Lindgren '19 sailed A division, Harrison Hawk '18 and Hannah Konkel '20 sailed B-division, and Christian Filter '20 and Emily Gonzalez '20 sailed C-division.
The Polar Bears have their first New England Championship of the year this upcoming weekend with the Men's and Women's Singlehanded Champs hosted by Roger Williams. The team will also compete in the Amanda Trophy at Roger Williams, the Hood Trophy at Tufts, and the Loder Trophy at UNH.
