Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine – Annie Glenn scored with under three minutes remaining in overtime to lift the Bowdoin women's lacrosse team to a season opening 7-6 win over visiting Amherst on Sunday afternoon.
The Polar Bears start the year at 1-0 (1-0 NESCAC) while handing eighth-ranked Amherst (0-1, 0-1 NESCAC) a season opening setback.
Game Highlights
- Bowdoin jumped out to an early 1-0 lead off a free position goal by Mettler Growney, but Amherst's Claire Cagnassola evened the game less than 30 seconds later.
- Amherst scored the next two goals to open a 3-1 lead with 3:50 to play in the first half as Kelly Karczewski and Kate Wyeth pushed the visitors ahead.
- Bowdoin responded with three straight goals in the final three minutes of the half. Kelsey Gallagher had a hand in each tally. Gallagher scored with 2:55 to play, off an assist from Hannah Hirschfeld, and then fed Allison Williams and then Hirschfeld to put the Polar Bears up 4-3 going into halftime.
- Hirschfeld converted on a free position shot early in the second, giving Bowdoin a two-goal lead, but Amherst evened the game with unassisted goals from Julia Crerend and Hanna Krueger to make it 5-5.
- Bowdoin regained the lead with 9:02 to play off a successful free position shot from Gloria Zhao. Crerend forced overtime with an equalizer at 1:18.
- With under three minutes to play in overtime, Glenn cut down the center of the field and beat a defender before going top left corner for the game-winner.
By the Numbers
- Kayli Weiss made 14 saves to earn the win in net for Bowdoin.
- Krya Gardner made six saves for Amherst.
- Bowdoin held a 19-13 edge in ground balls, while surrendering 23 turnovers. Amherst tallied 18 turnovers while both teams collected eight draw controls.
- Amherst was 1-for-7 on free position shots, compared to a 3-for-5 conversion for Bowdoin.
