Women's Hockey Holds Off Late Hawks Rally to Remain Unbeaten

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin women's hockey team survived a late Saint Anselm rally to remain undefeated with a 2-2 overtime tie on Saturday afternoon.

The Polar Bears are 2-0-2 on the season. The Hawks leave Brunswick with an 8-1-1 record after collecting their first tie of the season.

Game Highlights

  • Bowdoin struck first eight minutes into the opening period. Maureen Greason sparked the play as she controlled the puck behind Saint Anselm's net. Greason fed Jill Rathke on the left boards and Rathke fired towards the crease and a waiting Katie Leininger. Leininger poked in her first collegiate goal to give the Polar Bears a 1-0 lead.
  • Julie Dachille and Brooke Solomon nearly doubled the lead with a shorthanded two-on-goal. The pair skated into Hawk territory with Dachille carrying down the right. Maddie Scavotto shifted her angle to face Dachille and the junior dished a pass to her left for an open Solomon shot. Right as the puck looked like it was in the net, Scavotto deflected it away with the butt of her stick.
  • With five minutes to play, Ashley Moran intercepted a pass in the Bowdoin zone and turned back on net for a quick shot.  Moran's bid was turned away by Sophia Lattanzio to preserve the 1-0 first period lead.
  • The Polar Bears doubled their lead 3:16 into the second as Solomon and Dachille successfully converted on their second two-on-goal of the afternoon. Solomon skated down the right and fed Dachille off the left faceoff circle. Dachille pulled to further to her left before dragging the puck back across her body to backhand in Bowdoin's second.
  • The Hawks cut the scoring deficit in half with 4:12 to play in the period. Kaitlyn Spillane took a shot that sent the puck bouncing into the air around the crease. Maura Kieft skated on net and tracked it down to deflect in her team's first.
  • Saint Anselm erased the early two goal deficit with a late tally in the third. Kieft and Spillane combined again for their team's second straight. With Spillane collecting the puck off the back boards, she found Kieft with a centering pass to the low slot. With Lattanzio still on the post, Kieft had an open look on net to put away an equalizer.

By the Numbers

  • Lattanzio stood tall in net for the Polar Bears and made 33 stops, including five in overtime. Scavotto made 14 saves for the Hawks.
  • Both teams were unsuccessful on the power play. Bowdoin went 0-for-2 and Saint Anselm was 0-for-3.
  • Prior to the game, Saint Anselm had outscored opponents by a 44-12.
