Nationally Ranked Norwich Hands Women's Hockey First Loss

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Norwich women's ice hockey team handed Bowdoin its first loss of the season in a 3-1 Saturday night battle in Watson Arena.

The setback is the first of the season for the Polar Bears (4-1-2), but comes against the fourth ranked team in the nation. The Cadets (8-1-1) have suffered only one loss this season, falling to top ranked Plattsburgh.

Game Highlights

  • Every goal scored in the second period came on the power play. Bowdoin took the lead 3:47 into the frame, capitalizing on a quick faceoff win. Julie Dachille won the faceoff and kicked the puck out to Tala Glass at the point. Glass fired a shot on net that Brooke Solomon tipped past Laurie King.
  • The Cadets responded with a power play goal of their own less than a minute later. Sophie McGovern came across the right faceoff circle and wristed a hard shot over St. Denis to knot the game at 1-1. Robyn Foley and Maddie Tasha recorded assists.
  • Norwich took its first lead of the game on another power play opportunity at 12:27. Adrieana Rossini finished off a cross from Sarah Schwenzfeier to tally the go-ahead. Rossini wound up on a Schwenzfeier's cross from the left, blasting a slapshot past St. Denis.
  • The Cadets tallied their third straight goal just 3: 14 into the final period. Rossini, Jessica Piracini, and Schwenzfeier skated into a three on goal, drawing St. Denis towards the left post to play the puck. Piracini found Schwenzfeier on the far post to put away a clean look.

 By the Numbers

  • King earned the win in net for the Cadets behind a 23 save performance.
  • St. Denis made 26 stops for the Polar Bears.
  • The Cadets outshot the Polar Bears 10-6 in the opening period, while Bowdoin held a slight 9-8 edge in the final frame.
  • Norwich went 2-for-3 on the power play. Bowdoin was 1-for-3 with the extra skater.
