Polar Bears Post Shutout Victory Against Colby

Box Score

BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin women's ice hockey team collected its first win of the season in a 3-0 home opener on Sunday afternoon against Colby.

The Polar Bears (1-0-1, 1-0-1 NESCAC) controlled play throughout the game, outshooting the visiting Mules (0-1-1, 0-1-1 NESCAC) by a 51-13 margin.

Game Highlights

  • Despite Bowdoin dominating in total shots to begin the game, it was Delaney Flynn three minutes into the second period who had the most promising opportunity. Flynn intercepted a Bowdoin breakout pass in the zone and skated uncontested towards Sophia Lattanzio, hitting the sophomore goalie in the letters.
  • The Polar Bears finally capitalized to take a 1-0 lead five minutes into the second frame.  Jess Bowen tallied the assist as she kicked the puck from the left post out to the far side for Brooke Solomon. With traffic in the crease, Solomon had an open shot on the right.
  • Carly Thomas looked for an equalizer as she streaked towards the near post from the right corner six minutes into the third. Thomas tracked down the rebound but pushed her bid wide.
  • Bowdoin doubled its lead at 9:25 off a Maureen Greason goal. Jill Rathke sparked the play with a tic-tac-toe pass from the left boards to Brigit Bergin on the point. Bergin fired a shot towards net that Greason tipped up and over Halley Fine.
  • The Mules nearly spoiled the shutout as a bouncing puck from Katie McLaughlin danced on the goal line in the final minute. Lattanzio tracked the shot down to defuse the threat.
  • Julie Dachille iced the game with a diving empty net goal with 45 seconds remaining. The junior carried the puck out of Bowdoin's zone and deked around a Colby player before sliding to the ice at the blue line and pushing her shot on net.
By the Numbers
  • Fine made 48 stops in her collegiate debut for the Mules. Lattanzio tallied a shutout victory in her first start of the season with 13 saves.
  • Both teams went 0-for-3 on the power play.
