Finnerty's Last Second Goal Shocks Trinity as Women's Hockey Nets Wild Win

Box Score

HARTFORD, Conn. – Colleen Finnerty scored the game-winning goal with 0.8 seconds left to cap a wild third period and lead the visiting Bowdoin College Polar Bears to a 6-5 victory over the Trinity College Bantams Friday evening.

Trinity falls to 11-6-1 (4-6-1, NESCAC) while Bowdoin improves to 9-6-4 overall and 5-4-2 in the league.

Bowdoin built a 2-1 lead after one period, outshooting Trinity, 14-6, including a pair of power play tallies by Miranda Bell. Lauren Fitzgerald netted the equalizer just under six minutes remaining in the opening stanza before Bell's second put the Polar Bears back ahead with 1:33 on the clock.

Lucy Robinson accounted for the only scoring of the second period, scoring once on a redirect and a second time during a Bantam power play, as Trinity took the 3-2 lead into the second intermission. The Polar Bears scored three times in the first 9:03 of the third frame to regain the lead over Trinity.  Ariana Bourque won the opening face-off and quickly assisted Finnerty for the third period's opening goal just 11 seconds into play.  Bourque fed Rachel Kennedy on another goal 5:10 into the third, and Bell completed a hat trick with 10:57 on the clock.

Trailing, 5-3, with two minutes remaining, Trinity pulled goaltender Sydney Belinskas in favor of an extra skater twice and scored both times to tie the game at 5-5.  Robinson completed the hat trick when she jammed in a loose puck that had gotten behind Bowdoin goalie Lan Crofton with 1:39 left, and Kelcie Finn tied it with a wrap-around behind Crofton's right shoulder with 32 seconds remaining.  Bowdoin won the ensuing face-off, skated into the offensive zone, and Finnerty smacked the puck past Belinskas from close on the right side to win it for the Polar Bears.

Belinksas finished with 27 saves, while Crofton totaled 23 stops for Bowdoin.

The two teams face off again tomorrow afternoon at 4:00 p.m.
