BRUNSWICK, Maine - Maryanne Iodice scored her first collegiate goal with 9:13 to go in the third period to lift the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team to a 1-0 win in its home opener Saturday over Colby at Watson Arena.

Led by goaltender Lan Crofton's 30 saves, the Polar Bears complete a weekend sweep of the Mules and improve to 2-0-0 on the young season. Colby remains winless at 0-4-0.

The teams traded chances in the opening two periods, but the action picked up in earnest in the final frame. Colby opened the period with several shots on Crofton, which were swept aside. Bowdoin answered with a good chance in close by Miranda Bell that was saved by Colby's Angelica Crites.

Bowdoin earned a power play midway through the frame and cashed in with a pretty goal to take the lead. Marne Gallant played a cross-ice pass to Schuyler Nardelli, who drew the defense to the right wing. Nadelli fed Iodice at the point and the first-year ripped a low, hard shot that zipped past the skate of Crites inside the left post at 10:47.

The Mules went on the power play with 6:30 to go, but Crofton made several strong saves, including on a backhand by Delaney Flynn. Colby's last good chance came with a minute to go when Lauren Guarente came loose on the doorstep, but Crofton made a pad save to secure the shutout.

Crites played valiantly for the Mules, making 38 saves. Bowdoin held a 39-30 advantage in shots and went 1-3 on the power play. Colby went 0-2.

Both teams are back in action Tuesday night. Bowdoin will host UMass Boston at Watson Arena at 7:00 p.m. Colby will travel to Southern Maine for a 7:00 p.m. faceoff.
