BRUNSWICK, Maine - First-year goaltender Lan Crofton made 22 saves to lead the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team to a 4-1 win over Manhattanville in its 2014 debut at Watson Arena Saturday.

Four different players scored for the Polar Bears, who improve to 4-3-0, while the Valiants drop to 5-5-1 this season.

After controlling the first few minutes, Bowdoin took an early lead when Ariana Bourque centered a pass to Emily Tang at the point. The senior ripped a shot that slipped through traffic and into the net at 7:16.

Bowdoin doubled their lead midway through second period when a Kimmy Ganong snapped a shot from the point that skipped behind goaltender Kirsten Shaughnessy. Maddy Hall poked home the loose puck to give the Polar Bears a 2-0 advantage at 10:43. The Polar Bears extended their lead late in the frame with Chelsea MacNeil redirected a slap shot from Marne Gallant with 2:56 left in the period to give Bowdoin a 3-0 advantage heading into the final period of play.

The Polar Bears sealed the win with a nice breakaway goal late midway through the third. Chelsea MacNeil fed Colleen FInnerty, who wristed a shot to the top-right corner to give Bowdoin a 4-0 lead at 12:34. Manhattanville got one back with under five minutes to play when Michele Meggiolaro tucked a shot inside the right post, spoiling the shutout for Crofton.

Shaughnessy made 17 saves in net for Manhattanville in 53:57 before giving way to Olivia Drew, who stopped 3 shots over the final 6:03. The Polar Bears held a 24-23 advantage in shots.

Bowdoin will return to action Sunday with a home game against St. Thomas (Minn.) at 3:00 p.m. Manhattanville will travel to play at Stevenson on Tuesday afternoon at 1:00 p.m.
