Box Score BRUNSWICK, Maine – Carolyn Fuwa scored the game-winning goal in overtime to lift the Colby College women's ice hockey team to a 3-2 win over Bowdoin on Friday evening at Watson Arena.
The win is the first in six tries for the Mules at Watson Arena as Colby earns their first win of the season and improves to 1-2-0. The Polar Bears, who were making their season debut, drop to 0-1-0.
Colby got on the board 12:04 into the opening period after netminder Brianne Wheeler withstood several early Bowdoin threats. Kailey Buxbaum notched her first collegiate goal by putting home a rebound off an initial shot from Katie McLaughlin to give the Mules a 1-0 edge.
Colby doubled its lead in the second period when Annie Papadellis took control of the puck at the blue line, deked towards the slot and backhanded a shot past Beth Findley at 6:01.
Bowdoin cut into the lead in the third period when earned an early power play and converted when Chelsea MacNeil collected a loose puck in the corner and circled around, snapping a shot past Wheeler at 2:11. The Polar Bears evened the score at 7:18 as first-year Aliya Feroe tapped a puck out of the defensive zone ahead to Schuyler Nardelli, who carried the puck into the Colby zone and wristed a shot inside the post.
In overtime, Colby cashed in with just 20 seconds remaining when a Bowdoin committed a costly turnover in front of their net. Carolyn Fuwa wristed the shot towards the cage, where it trickled through traffic and crossed the goal line to give the Mules the 3-2 win.
Wheeler was outstanding in goal for the Mules, stopping 46 shots. Findley made 17 saves in net for Bowdoin, who held a 48-20 shot advantage.
The teams will play again on Saturday night in Waterville at 3:00 p.m.
