Polar Bears Ring In New Year With Resounding Win Over Plymouth State

BRUNSWICK, Maine - Andrew Madlinger scored a career-high 24 points, including six three-pointers, to pace the Bowdoin men's basketball team to a 88-66 victory over Plymouth State on Tuesday evening.

The Polar Bears open 2012 with their fifth consecutive win overall and improve to 8-2 this season. The Panthers lose their second straight contest and dip to 4-6 this year.

Madlinger led a balanced Bowdoin attack that saw the team shoot 60% from the field. The sophomore guard connected on 9-13 overall and nailed six of seven three-point attempts for his 24 points. Ryan O'Connell was nearly as effective, hitting 8-13 shots, including 4-7 from long-range for 21 points. Will Hanley notched his seventh double-double of the year with 17 points and 15 rebounds.

Brian Chergey had 16 points for Plymouth State thanks to a 4-8 effort from beyond the arc. Jesse Sabolis pitched in 12 while Kyle Walker had 10 off the bench for the Panthers.

Madlinger hit two of his trifectas to key a 12-2 run late in the first half that gave the Polar Bears a 44-30 edge at intermission. The Polar Bears pushed the lead over 20 points early in the second half and cruised to victory. Bowdoin owned a 42-23 edge on the glass and held Plymouth State to 37.1% shooting for the game.
