BRUNSWICK, Maine - Kaitlin O'Brien's second goal of the season came with under three minutes to play to give the Saint Anselm women's ice hockey team a 2-1 win over Bowdoin on Tuesday evening.
The Hawks, who also got a goal from Courtney Winters, improve to 9-4-0. Bowdoin, who received a goal from Colleen Finnerty, falls to 4-5-2 on the year. Sage Santangelo kept the Polar Bears in contention with 24 saves while Amy Zappen stopped 19 for Saint Anselm.
After a scoreless first period, Saint Anselm broke the ice just over a minute into the second frame. Molly Corl ripped a shot from above the left circle that skipped across the crease to Courtney Winters, who tapped home the puck on the far post at 1:21. Bowdoin evened the score seven minutes later as Colleen Finnerty redirected a Maddie Baird slapshot at 8:07.
Saint Anselm came out firing in the third period and Santangelo responded with several sparkling saves for the Polar Bears, the best of which came on a sprawling stop of a Rosemarie Giarrusso breakaway with ten minutes to play. The Hawks found the go-ahead goal with just under three minutes to play, though, as Kaitlin O'Brien collected a loose puck in the neutral zone and snapped a shot on Santangelo, who made the initial leg pad save. O'Brien backhanded the rebound inside the left post to give the visitors a 2-1 lead with 2:56 remaining.
Bowdoin pulled the goaltender with 1:55 to go and peppered the Saint Anselm net to no avail. Zappen stopped all nine shots she saw in the final period for the Hawks.
Saint Anselm held a 26-20 edge in shots. The contest, which was originally scheduled for a 4:00 p.m. start, was delayed 90 minutes due to problems with the ice surface.
