BRUNSWICK, Maine - McKenna Teague scored the game-winning goal with six seconds remaining in overtime to give the Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team a 10-9 victory over Colby in a battle of nationally-ranked teams Wednesday evening. The 14th-ranked Polar Bears (8-1, 4-1 NESCAC) beat eighth-ranked Colby (7-2, 3-2 NESCAC) for the third time in their last four meetings dating back to 2008.
Bowdoin featured a balanced attack as Teague, Elizabeth Clegg, Katie Stewart and Carolyn Gorajek each scored a pair of goals. Lindsey McKenna scored five times in the loss for Colby, who also got three goals from Casey Thomas.
The teams battled back-and-forth for 60 minutes with neither squad taking more than a one-goal lead in either direction. Trailing 7-6 with under nine minutes to play, Colby's Lindsey McKenna scored the game-tying goal with 8:57 remaining and netted the go-ahead score with 1:48 to go, giving the visitors an 8-7 advantage. Bowdoin won the ensuing draw control and Katie Stewart drove to the net, burying the game-tying tally with 1:27 left.
Katie Herter put Bowdoin ahead with 10 seconds left in the first three-minute overtime session but Thomas answered for Colby with 2:00 minutes remaining in the second session to set up a furious final 120 seconds. The Polar Bears made a defensive stand and controlled the ball for the final minute. Teague took control of the ball with 10 seconds left on the left wing, used a stutter-step to freeze the defense and drove straight through a trio of defenders to deposit the game-winning score with just six seconds left.
Tara Connolly made nine saves for Bowdoin while Sarah Warnke stopped eight for the Mules. Katie Stewart added five ground balls and two caused turnovers while Ingrid Oelschlager grabbed four draw controls for the Polar Bears, who held a slim 28-25 shot advantage. Lisa Hoopes had four ground balls and two caused turnovers for Colby.
