Bowdoin Loses Double-OT Heartbreaker at Bridgewater State

BRIDGEWATER, Mass. - In the second highest scoring game in school history, the Bowdoin College men's basketball team came up short in a thrilling 109-108 double-overtime loss at Bridgewater State on Tuesday evening. With their third-straight loss, the Polar Bears fall to 13-8 overall this season.

Will Hanley posted a career-high 33 points (on 13-16 shooting) and grabbed 12 rebounds in 43 minutes before fouling out late in the second OT. Justin Nowell had 22 points, eight rebounds and eight assists for Bowdoin as Ryan O'Connell (16) and Randy DeFeo (10) also reached double figures. With his career-high scoring performance, Hanley is within 11 points shy of 1,000 for his career.

Nicholas Motta led Bridgewater with 29 points, including a game-tying three-pointer with five seconds remaining in regulation to force overtime. Bridgewater's Anthony Fortes connected on a pair of free throws with 12 seconds left in the second overtime and the Bears were able to hang on for the victory despite a wild final ten seconds.

After Fortes hit his free throws to put Bridgewater up 109-106, Bowdoin junior guard Justin Nowell was fouled with six seconds left while attempting a three-pointer and went to the line for three shots.  Nowell buried the first two attempts but missed the third.  Junior guard Ryan O'Connell grabbed the long offensive rebound but his bank-shot was off the mark.  Freshman guard Matt Mathias gave the Polar Bears another life as he pulled down another offensive board, but his jumper at the buzzer was blocked by Motta.

The double-overtime game is the first since 2008 for the Polar Bears and the 217 combined points are the second-most scored in a Bowdoin game, trailing the 224 scored in a 1971 Bowdoin win over Tufts (116-108).

The Polar Bears will look to bounce back this Friday and Saturday with a NESCAC postseason berth on the line when they travel to play at Connecticut College and Wesleyan.
