BRUNSWICK, Maine – Maximilian Staiger dropped in the go-ahead basket with 12 seconds remaining in an eventual 84-82 victory over Thomas College on Tuesday evening at Morrell Gymnasium. The Polar Bears survived 14 Terrier three-pointers to improve to 13-5 this season. Thomas falls to 8-10 with the defeat.
Will Hanley stuffed the stat sheet with 24 points, 17 rebounds, four assists, three blocks and three steals for Bowdoin while Ryan O'Connell knocked down four three-pointers and finished with 24 points as well. Justin Nowell had 14 points and eight assists for the hosts in addition to 13 points and 14 rebounds from Staiger. Thomas was led by a 29-point, 10-carom effort from Jarrad DeVaughn and 22 points from Andrew Duncanson.
The visiting Terriers controlled most the first half thanks to red-hot shooting from the three-point line. Thomas connected on eight first-half trifectas, including four from Franklin Salvador and three from DeVaughn. A late 8-0 push from Bowdoin, capped by a O'Connell three-pointer, trimmed the Thomas lead to 38-35 at the break.
The second half saw 11 lead changes and five tie scores, the last of which came on a driving lay-in from DeVaughn to knot the score at 79 with one minute remaining. Staiger responded for Bowdoin with an offensive put-back to regain the lead before Isiah Brathwaite nailed a three-pointer to give Thomas an 82-81 lead with 30 seconds left. Justin Nowell drove the lane on Bowdoin's ensuing possession, resulting in a scramble at the rim. Staiger grabbed the loose ball and dropped it into the bucket, giving the Polar Bears an 83-82 edge with 12 ticks left. DeVaughn was fouled driving to the rim on Thomas' final possession, but missed both free throws. Ryan O'Connell knocked down a free throw and deliberately missed the second with 0.3 seconds left to seal the 84-82 victory for Bowdoin.
Bowdoin will return to action on Friday evening when they host nationally-ranked Williams at 6:00 p.m. in a key NESCAC contest.
