BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Will Hanley scored a game-high 23 points, including a clutch three-pointer with 1:30 to play, to lead the Polar Bear men's basketball team to a 66-61 win over St. Joseph's on Thursday night. The Polar Bears (8-2) have won a season-best five-straight games and snap a two-game losing skid to the Monks (5-4).
In addition to his scoring total, Hanley grabbed eight boards on the night. Maximilian Staiger had 12 points and ten rebounds for Bowdoin, who also got a dozen points from Ryan O'Connell. Zach O'Brien and Chris Petzy scored 13 points apiece to lead the Monks.
Neither team held a lead of more than six points and the lead swapped hands on 12 occasions and had nine tie scores in the closely-contested battle The contest entered the final two minutes with the Monks holding a one-point lead.
A layup by Clark Noonan pushed the advantage to three points, 61-58, with 1:43 to go. Bowdoin responded with a key three-pointer from Hanley, off a feed from Randy DeFeo, to tie the game at 61 with 1:30 to go. Bowdoin got a defensive stop and Staiger put back an offensive rebound with 29 seconds left to give the Polar Bears a 63-61 lead. Hanley collected on steal on St. Joseph's ensuing possession and O'Connell sealed the win with a basket and a free-throw to make it a 65-61 final.
Bowdoin held a key 35-27 edge on the glass and held the home team to just 40% shooting for the contest while connecting on 50% (28-56) of their own.
