Holtz Sparks Late Bowdoin Rally Against Sacred Heart

BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team scored four times in the third period to pull away from Sacred Heart in a 6-2 victory on Saturday evening at Sidney J. Watson Arena. The Polar Bears improve to 10-5-2 this season while the Pioneers fall to 7-16-0 on the year.

Kayte Holtz exploded for four goals in the win for the Polar Bears, marking the second time this season that she has scored four times in a game. Dominique Lozzi had a goal and an assist while Jill Campbell and Kim Tess-Wanat had two assists apiece in the victory. Nicole Palazzo scored a goal and an assist to lead Sacred Heart.

An evenly-played first period saw the teams trade great scoring chances that hit posts in the early going. Despite being out-shot 10-5 in the frame, Sacred Heart carried a one-goal lead into the second period after Nicole Palazzo fed Megan Murphy from behind the net, who slipped the puck between the pads of Tara Connolly at 10:51.

Holtz scored a pair of second period goals to put the Polar Bears ahead. She knocked home a rebound at 3:01 and, on the power play later in the frame, knocked in another rebound at 14:51. But the Pioneers were able to tie the game shortly before the second intermission when Palazzo converted on a breakaway chance with 1:41 remaining in the period.

The game remained tied until late into the third period, when Bowdoin scored twice in the span of 39 seconds to grab control of the game. A nice play by Lozzi in the corner set up Mallory Andrews in front for the go-ahead tally with 7:31 to go. Moments later, Campbell fed Holtz for her third goal of the game. Holtz added another score with 4:53 remaining before Lozzi rounded out the scoring with 30 seconds to go.

With four goals, Holtz improves her season total to 18 and moves into second place in Division III in goals per game. Additionally, her 18 goals this season are the most by a Polar Bear since Meghan Gillis and Kristen Cameron both scored 21 in the 2004-05 campaign.

Connolly finished with nine saves as Bowdoin out-shot Sacred Heart 41-11. ALexius Schutt made 35 saves for the Pioneers.
