BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Williams College women's lacrosse team
scored six unanswered goals in the second half to rally from a
four-goal second-half deficit en route to a 14-12 win over Bowdoin
in the NESCAC Quarterfinals on Sunday. The Ephs (10-6) advance to
the NESCAC Semifinals next weekend in Hartford, Conn. to play
top-seeded Trinity. Bowdoin falls to 10-6 with the loss.
Bowdoin carried an 8-5 lead into intermission and extended their
advantage to four goals early in the second half when Liz Clegg's
third goal of the game gave the Polar Bears a 9-5
advantage with 26:53 to go. But the Williams defense would blank
Bowdoin for the next 14 minutes and the Eph offense got on track,
scoring six times in a span of 9:20. Kaitlin Ellis sparked the run
with a pair of goals, and when Margie Fulton found the back of the
net with 15:42 remaining, Williams had taken an 11-9 lead.
The Polar Bears trimmed the lead to a single goal when
McKenna Teague converted on a free-position shot with 12:13
remaining, and Bowdoin had a pair of tremendous chances to tie the
game late, but twice hit posts on potential game-tying scores.
Ellis and Sam Weinstein scored consecutive goals with under four
minutes to play to extend the lead to three goals, and Bowdoin
could get no closer than two for the remainder of the contest.
Ellis led all scorers with four tallies to go with a pair of
assists. Fulton had three goals and a helper while Weinstein also
recorded a trio of goals. Whitney Thayer grabbed four draw controls
to lead Williams. Carolyn Gorajek had two goals and two assists for
Bowdoin, who received three goals apiece from Katie Herter and
Clegg. Becca Austin grabbed a game-high five ground balls for
Bowdoin while Emily French caused three turnovers.
In goal, Williams received 12 saves from Julia Schreiber,
including eight in the second period. Tara Connolly stopped nine
shots in net for the Polar Bears.
