BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Tufts University women's lacrosse team
dominated the second half, rallying from five-goal deficit to take
an 11-9 win over Bowdoin on Friday evening. The ninth-ranked Jumbos
improve to 11-3 (6-3 NESCAC) and earn the fifth seed for the
upcoming NESCAC Championship. The Polar Bears fall to 10-5 (6-3
NESCAC) and will be the second seed in the conference
tournament.
NESCAC Quarterfinal games will be at noon on Sunday. Tufts will
travel to fourth-seeded Amherst while Bowdoin hosts seventh-seeded
Williams. Friday night's game was postponed for over 90 minutes
after an accident on I-95 delayed Tufts' arrival.
Emily Johnson scored four times with an assist for Tufts, while
Casey Egan tossed in three goals and a pair of assists. Kelly
Cakert had a game-high six draw controls. Bowdoin was paced by
Carolyn Gorajek's three goals and assist in addition to three draw
controls. Becca Austin had four ground balls for Bowdoin while
Katie Stewart caused three turnovers for the Polar Bears.
Bowdoin controlled the first half, sprinting to a 7-2 lead after
Gorajek scored her third goal of the half with 1:57 to go before
intermission. Egan scored for Tufts with just 10 seconds left in
the period, and the Jumbos rolled off a 7-1 run to start the second
half, tying the contest on an Egan goal with 11:14 remaining and
taking the lead for good when Johnson scored just 22 seconds later.
The Jumbos held an 8-3 edge in draw controls in the second period
to spark the surge.
Sara Bloom finished with six saves for Tufts while Tara Connolly
made seven saves for the Polar Bears.
