NEW LONDON, Conn. - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse
team held off a late rally by Connecticut College in a 12-11
victory on Saturday afternoon. The 20th-ranked Polar Bears improved
their record to 5-3 and 3-1 in the conference with their fourth
straight win. The Camels slip to 3-4 and are 0-4 in league
play.
Sophomore midfielder Katie Stewart scored the eventual game-winner
for the visitors with 1:40 remaining in regulation. Liz Clegg,
Katie Herter and Stewart all contributed with three goals and one
assist to lead the Polar Bears on the offensive side of the ball.
Junior midfielder Ingrid Oelschlager tallied two scores while
classmate Katy Dissinger chipped in with a goal and an assist for
Bowdoin. Connecticut College sophomore Katelyn Driscoll scored a
game-high five goals in the setback for the hosts.
The Polar Bears went on a 4-to-0 run in the opening 10:34 of the
second half to build a sizable 11-7 advantage. Oelschlager scored
both of her goals during the stretch and the visitors appeared to
be on their way to victory. But Driscoll scored the next two goals
on free positions, making it an 11-9 game with 3:26 to go. Bowdoin
had the ball and was trying to kill the clock with the two goal
cushion but Stewart found a seam in the Camel defense and drove to
the cage for a goal that put the Polar Bears on top 12-9 with 1:40
remaining.
The Camels refused to go away and, after Driscoll scored her
fifth, Sara Christopher assisted Hill for a goal that trimmed the
deficit to 12-11 with 25 seconds left.
The Camels won the ensuing draw control but were whistled for a
charge and Bowdoin was able to kill the clock and hold on for its
fourth straight win. Rookie netminder Tara Connolly stopped nine
shots in the victory for the Polar Bears. Ashleigh Kowtoniuk made
13 saves in goal for Connecticut College.
