BOX SCORE
LEWISTON, Maine - The 14th-ranked Bowdoin College women's
lacrosse team won for the ninth time in their last ten outings,
claiming a 17-6 win over Bates on Tuesday evening.
The Polar Bears (10-4, 6-2 NESCAC) can assure themselves a NESCAC
Quarterfinal home game with a win in their regular season finale on
Friday evening against Tufts. If Bowdoin loses to the Jumbos, they
would need a loss by either Colby or Amherst to host on Sunday.
Katie Stewart scored four goals and added two assists, Liz Clegg
added four goals and one assist, and Katie Herter contributed three
goals and an assist to lead Bowdoin. Katy Dissinger and Ingrid
Oelschlager added two goals apiece.
Bowdoin slowly built a first-half lead thanks in large part to the
play of first-year goalie Tara Connolly, who made several excellent
saves of high-quality shots by the Bobcats in the early going.
Meanwhile Bowdoin got on the board with 25:48 left in the period on
an unassisted goal by Herter. Clegg scored back-to-back goals at
the 19:28 and 13:56 marks to make it 3-0, and Ingrid Oelschlager (2
goals) put the visitors ahead 4-0 on an assist by Carolyn Gorajek
with 12:25 left in the period.
Bates got its first score with 11:34 left in the period, as Joan
O'Neill connected to close the gap to 4-1. But Bowdoin then scored
eight unanswered goals over a period stretching into the fifth
minute of the second half for an insurmountable 12-1 lead with
25:23 to go. Bates starting goalie Mara Krueger made nine saves
before giving way to Leah Elsmore for the final 17:08. Connolly
finished with 12 saves for Bowdoin.
