BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team
dominated the second half on their way to an 11-3 win over
18th-ranked Amherst on Saturday at Ryan Field. The Polar Bears, who
outscored the Jeffs 8-1 in the second period, improve to 3-3 this
season (2-1 NESCAC) while Amherst falls to 3-2 (2-1 NESCAC).
Katie Stewart had three goals and an assist to lead Bowdoin, who
got two tallies apiece from Katy Dissinger, Katie Herter and Liz
Clegg. Marta Randall scored two of Amherst's three goals.
Leading 3-2 at halftime, Bowdoin scored six unanswered goals to
open the second half to take command of the contest. Ingrid
Oelschlager started the run with a goal just 20 seconds into the
period, and Stewart scored twice in the run as the Polar Bears took
a 9-2 advantage with 17:25 remaining. Randall was able to cut it to
9-3 with 16:26 to go, but Carolyn Gorajek answered less than three
minutes later for Bowdoin as the Polar Bears secured the win by
out-shooting the Jeffs 18-4 in the second stanza and forcing seven
Amherst turnovers in the period.
Tara Connolly was outstanding in goal for the Polar Bears,
stopping 10 shots, including seven key saves in the opening period.
Lamia Harik made 14 saves in the loss for Amherst, who were held to
their lowest goal output since a 14-3 loss to Middlebury on April
5, 2008.
Stewart had three caused turnovers and two ground balls for
Bowdoin, who also received three draw control wins from Dissinger.
Meredith LaRose had two caused turnovers and two draw controls for
the Jeffs.
