BRUNSWICK, Maine – The Bowdoin College men's
basketball team secured the fifth seed for the upcoming NESCAC
Tournament by taking a convincing 67-47 win over Connecticut
College in their regular season finale on Saturday. The Polar Bears
improve to 13-11 (4-5 NESCAC) while the Camels fall to 10-14 (2-7
NESCAC).
Bowdoin will travel to play at rival Bates in a NESCAC Quarterfinal
game next Saturday, February 20 at 3:00 p.m. More details will be
available next week. The Camels finish in ninth place overall and
miss out on the postseason tournament.
Bowdoin took a 33-22 lead into halftime thanks to dominant inside
play from Mark Phillips and sharp outside shooting from Mike
Hauser. Phillips scored 14 first-half points while Hauser connected
on all three three-pointers he attempted to pace the home team to
the 11-point edge at the break.
After Rob Harrigan opened the second period for Conn. College with
a three-pointer that immediately trimmed the lead to eight points,
Bowdoin went on a 7-0 surge capped by a Will Hanley hoop-and-harm
to push the lead to 15. Hanley scored 11 second-half points in all
as Bowdoin increased their lead to as many as 24 points en route to
victory.
Phillips ended with 21 points and seven rebound to bring him to
within 17 points of the 1,000 point plateau for his career. Hanley
ended with 18 and 10 while Mike Hauser scored 12 points – on
four three-pointers – and added five assists. Shavar Bernier
led all players with 24 for the Camels, while Demetrius Porter
added 12 points and six rebounds. Bowdoin held a 34-26 edge on the
glass for the game and held the visitors to just 31.3% shooting for
the contest.

The trio has led the Polar Bears to 67 career wins, earned the
program's first-ever NESCAC Championship game appearance and
collected an NCAA berth in 2008.
