Tess-Wanat OT Game-Winner Gives O'Neil Victory in Debut

WATERVILLE, Maine - Kim Tess-Wanat scored 57 seconds into overtime off a pass from Jill Campbell as the Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team opened the season with a hard-fought 2-1 win over Colby College on Saturday night at Alfond Rink in NESCAC play. Polar Bear head coach Marissa O'Neil, a 2005 graduate of Bowdoin, earned her first win as head coach of her alma mater.

The goalies were the story of the first two periods as the teams played to a scoreless tie. Tara Connolly finished with 28 saves for Bowdoin, while first-year goaltender Brianne Wheeler stopped 22 shots in the first two periods and finished with 30 saves in her debut.

Bowdoin scored just 42 seconds into the third period when Kayte Holtz tallied off a pass from Shelagh Merrill. However, Colby tied the game at 2:48 of the period on an unassisted goal by Stephanie Scarpato.

The Polar Bears will host Salve Regina in their home-opener on Tuesday evening at 7:00 p.m.
