BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Sacred Heart women's ice hockey team
defeated Bowdoin in a high-scoring affair on Saturday evening, 9-7.
The 16 combined goals sets a new Sidney J. Watson Arena record. The
Pioneers improve to 5-10-1 with the victory while the Polar Bears
fall to 4-5-2 and are winless in their last four games (0-3-1). The
teams will play again on Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. in
Brunswick.
Brittany Hartman and Lauren Fontaine scored two goals and three
assists apiece to lead the
Pioneers. Kate Dunlop also netted two goals and two helpers for
the visitors. Katie Pokrass (two goals) and Shelagh Merrill (one
goal, three assists) led the Polar Bears in scoring.
An explosive first period saw the teams total 27 shots and eight
goals against four different goaltenders as the Pioneers skated out
to a 4-0 lead in the opening eight minutes to chase Bowdoin starter
Tara Connolly. Sacred Heart added a fifth goal before consecutive
tallies from Katie Pokrass sparked a three-goal spurt from the
Polar Bears in a 40 second span that forced Pioneer netminder
Raelene Sydor out of the contest.
Leading 5-3 heading into the second period, Sacred Heart scored
three times in 4:17 late in the period to push their lead to 8-3.
Bowdoin was able to get one back prior to the end of the stanza to
trail 8-4 after two periods. The squads traded goals to open the
final frame before scoring twice in a 1:12 span to cut the Sacred
Hear lead to 9-7. Bowdoin could get no closer in the final six
minutes as the Pioneers clung to victory.
Tara Kent, Kristina Hankins and Jamie Mey also scored goals for
Sacred Heart. Sydor made seven saves and allowed three goals in
13:26 before giving way to Emily Siira, who earned the victory with
25 saves and four goals allowed in 46:34. Tara Connolly (two saves,
three goals, 8:01), Sage Santangelo (12 saves, four goals, 31:59)
and Kayla Lessard (eight saves, one goal, 20:00) split time in net
for Bowdoin. The Polar Bears also received goals from Kim
Tess-Wanat, Stephanie Ludy, Al Chlebeck and Kayte Holtz in the
loss.
