BOX SCORE
BOSTON, Mass. - Lake Forest sophomore Kim Herring netted the
game-winner just 29 seconds into overtime to lead the sixth-ranked
Forester women's ice hockey team over Bowdoin, 3-2, Sunday in
the Consolation Game of the Third Annual Women's Codfish Bowl
at UMass-Boston. The Foresters improve to 9-1-2 on the season,
while the Polar Bears fall to 4-4-1.
The goal, which capped a hat trick for Herring, ruined a dramatic
comeback by the Polar Bears, who rallied to score twice in the
third period to force overtime.
After Herring scored once in each of the first two periods to give
Lake Forest a 2-0 advantage, the Polar Bears erased the deficit
with a pair of third period goals. Kayte Holtz notched her third
goal of the season just 47 seconds into the frame before Bowdoin
knotted the contest when Shelagh Merrill buried her fifth goal of
the year with 2:48 left to go in regulation. But shortly after the
start of overtime, Herring - the nation's leading scorer - pounced
on a rebound in front for the game-winning tally.
Goaltender Alyssa Wintermute earned the victory for the Foresters
with 41 saves, while rookie goalie Tara Connolly made 24 stops in
her collegiate debut for the Polar Bears. Bowdoin owned a 43-27
shot advantage for the game.
