BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team
bounced back in the second game of a two-game set against Sacred
Heart on Sunday, 5-2, at Sidney J. Watson Arena. The Polar Bears
improve to 5-5-2 this season while the Pioneers drop to 5-11-1.
Bowdoin got things going when Dominique Lozzi received pass from
Shana Natelson on the left wing and snapped a shot to the top-right
corner for a powerplay goal at 8:17 of the opening period. Bowdoin
doubled their lead four minutes later when Kim Tess-Wanat took a
feed from Jill Campbell in front and deposited a top-shelf goal at
12:21. The Pioneers were able to get one back before intermission,
when Lauren Fontaine knocked home a loose puck in front with 16
seconds left in the period to make it 2-1 after one period.
Shelagh Merrill added to the Bowdoin lead midway through the second
period by pouncing on a rebound at 11:16 to make it 3-1 Polar
Bears. Early in the third period, Sacred Heart responded when Tara
Kent finished off a scramble in front for a powerplay score at
5:55. But a turnover in the defensive zone by Sacred Heart saw
Bowdoin's Katie Herter collected a loose puck and skate in alone on
netminder Emily Siira, beating her with a backhander at 11:42 of
the third. Kayte Holtz added an empty-netter with 28 seconds left
to seal the win for Bowdoin.
A day after Bowdoin allowed a season-high nine goals, Kayla Lessard
was outstanding in goal, stopping 29 shots for her fourth win of
the season. Siira collected 28 saves in the loss for the Pioneers.
Al Chlebeck had two assists for the hosts, while Lozzi and Holtz
each carded an assist in addition to their goals.
