BRUNSWICK, Maine - Liz Clegg scored four times, including the
game-winning tally in the third overtime, to lift the Bowdoin
College women's lacrosse team to an 11-10 win over Bates on Tuesday
night.
The Polar Bears, who trailed by as many as three goals in the
second half, improve to 8-6 (3-5 NESCAC) and give goaltender Steph
Collins-Finn her school-record 40th career win. Bates falls to 8-6
(3-5 NESCAC) with the defeat as the squads enter Friday's regular
season finale tied for sixth place in the conference standings.
The Bobcats held a 16-7 advantage in shots in the opening half
and carried a 4-2 lead into the break thanks to a late tally by
Joan O'Neill with just two seconds remaining in the period. Bates
extended their advantage to three goals on two occasions in the
second period, the last of which coming on a Caroline Pierce
free-position goal with 16:56 remaining that gave the visitors a
6-3 lead.
Bowdoin rebounded with an improbable 5-1 run over the next ten
minutes of the game as senior Lindsay McNamara scored a pair of
goals in the surge. Katy Dissinger, who lost a tooth in a
first-half collision, returned in the second period to assist on
the game-tying tally by Emily Straus with 10:55 left. When Ingrid
Oelschlager found the back of the net at 6:02, Bowdoin held their
first lead of the game, 8-7.
Pierce deadlocked the game for Bates with 1:50 left in regulation,
but Clegg yanked the lead back for Bowdoin with a score at 35
seconds. Bates won the ensuing draw control, and Molly Radis forced
overtime with a free-position goal with just 15 ticks left in the
period.
In the first of two three-minute overtime sessions, Bowdoin
grabbed the lead on another goal from McNamara, but Bates found the
equalizer in the second session as Jenna Dannis scored with just
six seconds on the clock. In the sudden-death overtime session,
Bowdoin's Clegg drew a foul going to goal midway through the frame
and buried the game-winning score.
Collins-Finn, who sets the program mark with her 40th career
victory, collected 14 saves on the night. Clegg led Bowdoin with
four goals while McNamara ended with three. Pierce led Bates with
four goals while Radis and Dannis had two apiece. Mara Krueger
stopped five shots in net for the Bobcats.
