BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's lacrosse team
suffocated Williams, holding the Ephs to a season-low seven goals
in a key 10-7 NESCAC victory on Saturday. The Polar Bears improve
to 7-6 (2-5 NESCAC) with the win while Williams drops to 6-4 (3-4)
with the defeat. With the win, Bowdoin goaltender Stephanie
Collins-Finn tied the school record with her 39th career win
between the pipes.
Tied at two in the early going, Bowdoin rolled off four straight
goals to take a commanding first-half lead. Ingrid Oelschlager
sparked the run with a pair of goals, including a coast-to-coast
effort with 10:13 remaining in the period. The Ephs responded with
a three-goal run of their own and drew within a single goal at the
half, 6-5, following a score from Julia Nawrocki with 1:54
remaining before the break.
The Polar Bears took control with a dominating first 15 minutes of
the second period, scoring four times from four different players.
Elizabeth Clegg's goal with 15:07 remaining gave the hosts a 10-5
lead. Britt Spackman and Kaitlin Ellis tallied late scores for
Williams, but Bowdoin was able to possess uninterrupted for nearly
the final seven minutes of the game to clinch the victory.
Collins-Finn's eight saves for the Polar Bears ties the record
held by Julia McCombs '02, while Becca Austin collected five
groundballs and three draw controls for Bowdoin. Oelschlager,
Lindsay McNamara and McKenna Teague had two goals apiece to lead
the Bowdoin scorers. Williams got nine saves from Julia Schreiber
and two goals apiece from Margie Fulton and Tracey Ferriter.
