BRUNSWICK, Maine - First-year Liz Clegg scored the game-winning
goal with 2:54 remaining as the Bowdoin women's lacrosse team
survived a late scare to take an 11-10 win over Connecticut College
on Saturday. The Polar Bears improve to 5-3 overall (1-3 NESCAC)
while the Camels fall to 2-5 (0-4 NESCAC).
Clegg broke a 10-10 tie with under three minutes to go, receiving a
pass from Ingrid Oelschlager and scoring her only goal of the game
to give the Polar Bears the lead. The Camels were able to wrestle
the ball back from the Polar Bears with under a minute to go and
had a great chance to force overtime. A loose ball in front of the
Bowdoin cage resulted in a scramble. The ball came to the waiting
stick of Conn's Emily Mason, who scooped the ball towards an open
net. Bowdoin goaltender Steph Collins-Finn made a diving retreat,
covering the ball just inches short of the goal line as time
expired.
Lindsay McNamara had five goals for the Polar Bears, including
three in the opening half as the teams entered the break tied a
seven. Neither team had more than a one goal lead for the final 40
minutes of the game and the squads traded goal-for-goal in the
second half.
Ali Iovanella scored three times to lead the Camels while Sara
Christopher had a pair of goals. Mason had two goals and a
team-high three caused turnovers for Connecticut College while Ali
McPherson led the visitors with four groundballs. Ashleigh
Kowtoniuk made 13 saves in goal.
Bowdoin's Steph Collins-Finn made 11 saves while Katie Herter had
two goals, an assist, three draw controls and two caused turnovers.
McNamara had five groundballs for Bowdoin, who held a 14-9
advantage in draw controls. The Camels held a 31-30 edge in shots
while Bowdoin surived 24 turnovers on the afternoon.
