WILLIAMSTOWN, Mass. - Bowdoin's Kyle Jackson scored a team-high 22
points as the Polar Bear men's basketball team won in Williamstown
for the first time since the 1960's, taking a 76-71 win over the
Ephs on Saturday afternoon. Bowdoin improves to 14-7 (3-4 NESCAC)
while Williams drops to 15-7 (5-2).
Neither team could garner larger than a seven-point lead at any
point, as the contest featured 16 lead changes and five tie scores.
Bowdoin carried a three-point lead (39-36) into the break thanks to
a perfect shooting half from Mark Phillips (4-4) who scored nine in
the frame.
The squads traded the lead until late in the game, when Blake
Schultz nailed a three-pointer to give the hosts a 71-70 lead with
under two minutes remaining. Bowdoin answered with a jumper from
Phillips to regain the advantage, 72-71, with 1:36 remaining.
Schultz had a chance to tie the game with a pair of free throws
with under a minute to play, but missed both. Bowdoin posted a key
defensive stop and Tim Lane buried a pair from the charity stripe
with 25 ticks left to give Bowdoin a 74-71 lead. Williams could not
answer, and Lane collected two more freebies to seal the victory.
It is Bowdoin's first victory at Williams since the 1968-69
campaign. Overall, the Polar Bears have won three of their last
four meetings with the Ephs.
With 22 points today, Jackson sits a 972 for his career with
three regular-season games remaining on the schedule. Phillips
pitched in 15 points while Lane added 11 and a team-high six
rebounds.
