BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team
closed out their regular season with a 6-2 non-conference victory
over Potsdam State on Saturday at Sidney J. Watson Arena. The Polar
Bears improve to 11-10-1 overall and enjoy an eight-game winning
streak, their longest since the 2004-05 season. Despite the
late-season winning streak, Bowdoin will have to travel for the
first round of the NESCAC Tournament that begins next Saturday,
February 28. The Polar Bears can be no higher than the fifth seed
after Colby and Trinity split their two-game set this weekend.
Complete pairings will be announced on Sunday evening.
On Saturday, Bowdoin received a pair of goals from Sam Stewart and
Katie Herter for the second straight night in their victory over
Potsdam (4-17-2). The teams traded first-period goals as Shana
Natelson slapshot from the point gave Bowdoin the lead at 8:24.
Just moments later, Stephanie Simons put home a rebound for Potsdam
to even the score at one apiece after one period of play.
Bowdoin scored three times in the second period, as Stewart got
things going at 1:45 with a top-shelf goal to give the Polar Bears
a 2-1 lead. Senior captain Julia King added to the Bowdoin lead
late in the period, collecting the game-winning tally at 17:33 when
she received a pass from the corner, handled around Potsdam
netminder Hilary Hitchman and deposited the puck into the cage.
Katie Herter's goal with 28 seconds left in the period gave the
hosts a 4-1 lead heading into the final period.
After Potsdam's Annemarie Lewis notched her seventh goal of the
season to trim the lead to 4-2 at 3:46 of the third, Bowdoin
received a shorthanded tally from Herter and a powerplay score from
Stewart to round out the scoring. Emileigh Mercer stopped 15 shots
in the win. Hitchman collected 40 saves in defeat for Potsdam.
