BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team
extended their win streak to seven games, using a four-goal second
period to take an eventual 6-1 victory on Friday evening. The Polar
Bears improve to 10-10-1 overall this year and will host the Bears
(4-16-2) at 2:00 p.m. tomorrow in their regular season finale.
After dominating the opening period, Bowdoin was finally able to
find the back of net courtesy of Jill Campbell with 2:49 remaining
in the frame. Campbell took control of the puck at center ice,
handled around a pair of defenders and went five-hole to give the
Polar Bears a one-goal edge.
The Polar Bears doubled their lead just 26 seconds into the second
period, when Shelagh Merrill skated around the net and fed
Dominique Lozzi in front for a one-timer goal. Katie Herter made it
3-0 midway through the period, banging home a loose puck in front
after a feed from Kendra Sweet at 8:42. Campbell netted her second
goal of the game on a wrister from between the circles at 14:59 to
make it 4-0 before Samantha Stewart put home a loose puck in front
at 16:58 to give the Polar Bears a five-goal spread at the end of
two periods.
Potsdam found the back of the net with 7:22 remaining when
Stephanie Simons put home a puck in front to cut the Polar Bear
advantage to 5-1. Stewart answered quickly for Bowdoin, slipping
home a wrap-around goal at 6:31 to push the lead back to five.
Emileigh Mercer was forced to only make nine saves in the victory
for Bowdoin while Hilary Hitchman made 35 stops between the pipes
for Potsdam.
