BRUNSWICK, Maine - Bowdoin's Kyle Jackson scored a team-high 15
points, becoming the 19th player in program history to reach the
1,000 point plateau, as the men's basketball team held off
Connecticut College on Senior Day at Morrell Gymnasium, 56-51. The
Polar Bears (16-8, 5-4 NESCAC) earn the fifth seed in the upcoming
NESCAC Tournament and will play at fourth-seeded Colby next
Saturday, February 21 in the quarterfinals. The Camels (13-11, 2-7)
slip into the eighth spot and will play at top seeded Middlebury
next Saturday.
The Camels held a 30-28 lead at halftime thanks to the efforts of
Shavar Bernier. Bernier was unconscious, hitting on all six
three-pointers he attempted in the half to lift the visitors to
slim lead at intermission.
The second period featured five tie scores and five lead changes,
the final of which came with two minutes to play. Down by one,
Bowdoin point guard Mike Hauser drew a foul driving to the hoop and
netted both freebies to put the Polar Bears on top, 51-50. The
Camels had three chances on a lengthy possession to regain the
lead, but Bowdoin's defense held strong and the hosts connected on
6-6 from the charity stripe down the stretch to seal the win.
Jackson's 15 points put him at exactly 1,000 for his career. Will
Hanley scored 11 points off the bench while Tim Lane grabbed 13
rebounds, including six offensive caroms. Despite a scoreless
second half, Bernier led all players with 18 points for Conn.
College. Demetrius Porter scored 17 points and grabbed seven
rebounds off the bench.
Bowdoin honored their senior class of Darian Reid-Sturgis, Lane
and Jackson in a pregame ceremony. The trio, with 69 wins to their
credit, is the second-most successful senior class in the history
of Polar Bear men's basketball.
