BRUNSWICK, Maine - Mark Phillips scored 19 points and Tim Lane
added 14 to lead the Bowdoin College men's basketball team to a
72-46 victory over Wesleyan on Friday evening. With the win, the
Polar Bears (15-8, 4-4 NESCAC) clinch a playoff bid entering the
final day of regular season play Saturday. The Cardinals fall to
6-16 (2-6 NESCAC) overall.
The Polar Bears dominated the first half, shooting 70.8% from the
field to scamper to a 44-21 lead by intermission. Up 11-9 in the
early going, Bowdoin used a 19-3 run over the next ten minutes to
push their lead to 30-12. The Polar Bears took advantage inside, as
Phillips (13 points) and Lane (12) both reached double figures by
halftime. Bowdoin also converted Wesleyan miscues, scoring 16
points off of eight Cardinal turnovers in the opening stanza.
The Cardinals could get no closer than 16 points in the second
half as Bowdoin's 26-point lead at the buzzer equaled their largest
lead of the contest.
Bowdoin finished at 52% shooting for the game and received 10
points off the bench from Ryan O'Connell. Wesleyan was led by 17
points from Jason Mendell and 10 from Gabe Kreisberg. Bowdoin held
a 38-23 edge on the boards and blocked six Cardinal shots on the
night, holding the visitors to 32.7% shooting from the field.
