BOX SCORE
BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Bowdoin College women's ice hockey team
broke a six-game winless skid against Colby, stifling the Mules in
a 4-1 victory on Tuesday evening at Sidney J. Watson Arena. The win
is the first-ever for the Polar Bear women's squad at Watson Arena
and a season-high fourth-straight win for the squad. Bowdoin
improves to 7-10-1 (5-8-1 NESCAC) while the Mules fall to 9-8-3
(6-6-2 NESCAC).
After a flurry of Bowdoin shots to open the game, Maria Nicolais
was able to find the back of the net after intercepting a puck in
the neutral zone. Nicolais skated in and wristed a shot that beat
Colby netminder Lacey Brown to the lower-right corner for a 1-0
lead at 5:32. The Mules evened the score just over three minutes
later when Stephanie Scarpato broke in alone on Bowdoin's Sage
Santangelo, poking the puck just over the goal line to tie the game
at one apiece. The Polar Bears regained the lead shortly before
intermission with a powerplay goal as Dominique Lozzi tucked a shot
inside the right post at 16:32.
After a scoreless second period, Bowdoin continued to suffocate
the Mules into the final stanza. Late in the period, Jill Campbell
collected a puck off the boards and beat a defender. Campbell
wristed a chance that richoted off the post and into the cage for a
3-1 Polar Bear lead with 2:52 remaining. The Polar Bears sealed the
win with a shorthanded tally at 18:12 when Shelagh Merrill banged
home her own rebound.
Santangelo finished with 13 saves while Brown ended with 34 stops
in net for Colby. Bowdoin's victory is their first over the Mules
since December of 2005. The Polar Bears had been 0-3-3 against the
Mules since that loss.
