GORHAM, Maine - Will Hanley posted his second-straight
double-double and scored the game-winning bucket with three seconds
remaining to give the Bowdoin College men's basketball team a 68-66
victory over Southern Maine on Tuesday evening. The Polar Bears
(3-1) led by as many as 20 points in the second half and survived a
furious comeback to pick up their 11th-straight win over the
Huskies (1-5).
Bowdoin led by 18 at intermission thanks to 52% shooting in the
first period. Ryan O'Connell came off the bench firing, hitting 3-4
three-pointers to lead the team with 11 points at the break while
Mark Phillips connected on all five of his shots to score ten by
the break.
The Polar Bears opened up a 20-point led (47-27) early in the
second half only to see the Huskies explode on a 28-8 run over the
next eight minutes to tie the game at 55 with ten minutes to play.
Cortez Isaac was scalding, connecting on five three-pointers in the
second half for USM, who took the lead on a John Sewall
three-pointer, 58-57, with 8:37 to go.
The teams traded buckets before a quick spurt by the Huskies,
capped by another jumper from Isaac, gave them a five-point edge
with 4:00 left, 66-61. But Bowdoin would not allow another point
and a three-pointer from Mike Hauser and lay-in by Randy DeFeo tied
the game at 66 with 1:30 to go.
Isaac missed a go-ahead lay-up with 30 seconds left and Mark
Phillips grabbed the rebound for Bowdoin. After a timeout, Hanley
took the ball to the hoop and netted the game-winner for the Polar
Bears. Hanley finished with 18 points and 13 caroms, while Phillips
scored 14. Paul Sellew grabbed a game-high 14 rebounds, including
five offensive, and O'Connell finished with 14 off the bench.
Isaac finished with a game-high 34 points for USM. Bowdoin held a
46-26 edge on the glass, but committed 12 turnovers to help the
Huskies stay in the game.
The Polar Bears will return home to face rival Bates at 7:30 on
Thursday evening.
