BRUNSWICK, Maine - Kaitlin O'Brien scored a pair of third-period
goals to lead the Saint Anselm College women's ice hockey team to a
3-1 win over Bowdoin on Tuesday evening. The Hawks improve to 4-1-1
overall while Bowdoin drops to 1-1-0 this season.
After an evenly-played first period, Bowdoin struck first as Katie
Herter laid a pass to Maria Nicolais, who drove to the slot and
banged home a goal at 14:49. Saint Anselm evened the score less
than two minutes later, netting a shorthanded goal when Rosemarie
Giarrusso beat Bowdoin netminder Kayla Lessard with a backhander to
the top right corner at 16:08.
Lessard kept the score tied with a nifty save on Giarrusso early in
the third, but O'Brien pounced on a turnover in front of the
Bowdoin cage midway through the final frame. She slid the puck past
Lessard at 10:24 to give the visitors the lead. O'Brien picked up a
puck in the neutral zone and wristed a shot from the high slot that
beat Lessard five minutes later to seal the win.
Lessard made 24 saves in her collegiate debut for Bowdoin. Amy
Zappen remained unbeaten on the year (3-0-1) with 30 stops on the
night.
