BRUNSWICK, Maine - Paced by four players in double figures and 51%
shooting in the second half, the Bowdoin College men's basketball
team pulled away from the University of New England in a 80-64
victory on Tuesday evening. The Polar Bears improve to 2-1 overall
this season while the Nor'easters drop to 2-3.
Up 43-37 at intermission thanks to 15 first-half points from Will
Hanley, the University of New England stayed close thanks to nine
three-pointers and 12 Polar Bear turnovers in the opening
stanza.
Bowdoin settled down offensively in the second period and clamped
down on the Nor'easters' outside shooting. UNE got as close as six
points, 64-58, with eight minutes remaining after a JJ Roseman
steal and Anthony Johnson lay-in. Bowdoin responded with a decisive
14-3 run over the next five minutes to put the contest out of
reach. The run was keyed by a trio of Polar Bear dunks - one by
Will Hanley and a pair by Mark Phillips.
Phillips led all players with 20 points and grabbed eight boards
in the win. Hanley finished with 19 points and 15 rebounds for
Bowdoin while Ryan O'Connell posted 18 points and four
three-pointers. Paul Sellew also saw double-figures for the Polar
Bears with 10 points.
UNE was led by 14 from Marcus Winn while Kadare Brown posted 11.
Quentin Thompson and Anthony Johnson scored 10 apiece for the
Nor'easters in the loss. Bowdoin owned the rebounding battle,
dominating the glass 49-29. The Polar Bears also assisted on 24 of
their 32 baskets for the night.
