MIDDLETOWN, Conn. - The Bowdoin College men's soccer team
out-shot 15th-ranked Wesleyan and played to a scoreless draw
against the Cardinals on Saturday. Dan Hicks and the Polar Bear
defense stood tall, making a pair of saves in the deadlock.
Bowdoin survived three Wesleyan shots in a 21-second span in the
49th minute in what was the most dangerous chance for either squad.
With goalkeeper Dan Hicks out of position, Wesleyan junior Austin
Woolridge fired a shot at the open net but right into Bowdoin
defender Sean Bishop, who was standing at the goal line. Wesleyan
senior Nick Whipple corralled the rebound and fired another shot at
the goal, but Hicks, who made two saves for his fourth shutout, was
able to block the ball, which bounded to freshman Walter Rodriguez.
Rodriguez' shot sailed over the net, and Bowdoin successfully
cleared on the ensuing goal kick.
Bowdoin's best scoring chance came early in the first half.
Junior Tim Prior attempted a header from the middle of the box, but
it went right into the hands of Wesleyan goalkeeper Adam Purdy, who
made six saves in his fifth shutout of the season. Neither keeper
needed to make any saves in the overtime periods as the teams
combined for four shots, none of which was on net.
The two teams were almost even on the stat sheet, with Bowdoin
holding a 14-12 edge in shots thanks to a 2-0 advantage in that
category in the second overtime period. Bowdoin also took six
corner kicks to Wesleyan's three.
