BRUNSWICK, Maine - The Amherst College men's basketball team
shot 51.8% from the field en route to a 73-52 victory over Bowdoin
in New England Small College Athletic Conference play on Friday
night at Morrell Gymnasium. The Jeffs improve to 16-2 (4-0) while
the Polar Bears fall to 11-6 (1-3)
The visitors carried a 10-point lead into intermission, 36-26,
thanks to six first-half three-pointers and just one turnover.
Brian Baskauskas, who would finish with a game-high 19 points,
tallied a dozen in the opening stanza to give the Jeffs the
advantage at the break.
Amherst extended their lead to 15 points early in the second period
when Steven Wheeler hit a three-pointer, giving the Jeffs a 41-26
lead. But Bowdoin would chip away at the lead over the next ten
minutes, drawing to within seven points, 53-46, on a Will Hanley
lay-in with ten minutes remaining.
Bowdoin could get no closer, however, as the Jeffs ripped off a
13-0 surge over the next six minutes to seal the game. When Mike
Holsey buried a lay-up with 3:09 left to cap the run, Amherst had
an insurmountable 66-46 advantage.
Baskauskas had five rebounds and four assists to go with his
game-high point total. The Jeffs also had Conor Meehan (10 points)
and Jeff Holmes (10 points) in double-figures. Amherst's bench
totaled 28 points on the evening.
Bowdoin was led by 18 points from Mark Phillips and a dozen from
Will Hanley off the bench. Bowdoin struggled from outside,
connecting on only four of 16 points from long-distance.
